Frisco Bike Park Grand Opening

by Flowline Trail Design
Sep 15, 2011 at 17:39

The crew at Flowline Trail Design, in partnership with the Town of Frisco, Colorado, is proud to announce the Frisco Bike Park Grand Opening this Saturday, September 24th 2011. This project has been a few years in the making, and thanks to the hard work and dedicated efforts of those involved, this dynamic vision has been brought to life. On a site that was recently clear-cut due to pine beetle infestation, a transformation has taken place. That previously disturbed slope has been carefully crafted into a progressive and sustainable bike park facility, catering to any type of rider, beginner or advanced, bmx or mtb.

Frisco Bike Park offers something for everyone. From the top start zone, riders can choose between intermediate and advanced jump trails, or a beginner flow trail. Each of these trails descends into the base area. This lower area features a dedicated dirt jump zone, created with a multitude of line options for all levels of rider. A large pump track is also nestled into the base area, and again, the rider’s creativity here is the only limitation.

Phase one of the park, which opened on July 4th, featured the upper trails in the park, and has been well received by the local riders. We're stoked to open up the rest on the 24th and finally get riders down in it! Please show Frisco your support this Saturday as we kick things off. The bike park will be free and open to the public all day, with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., followed by pump track races, jump jams and to cap it all off, some live rock-reggae in the evening. Come on out and bring your friends for a fun-fueled day of riding trails, boosting jumps, enjoying a cold beverage and grooving to some live music.

So, where's the freeride? Is it all dirt jumps and pump tracks? Is there anything suitable for a bike sporting dual crown forks?

flag iamamodel (Sep 20, 2011 at 14:58)
That place looks sick and anyone living in the area is very lucky. But...

I really disagree that those table tops are safer than a set of doubles.

I would say the main thing is that big jumps require practice and skill. As Yoda said "Do or do not - there is no try."

If you 50/50 a big steep table top, you go OTB and land down in the transition a lot harder than if you just chainringed it and stopped. And if you are mid-air on a big double there is plenty of time to bail - on a tabletop the ground comes up faster.

"Tabletops are safer" is, in my experience, a perception, not a reality. Big jumps are dangerous, tables or doubles, but no-one tries a set of doubles until they are absolutely 100% certain they will make the landing - not so tabletops. Doubles keep the fluff off - you don't get kids that have no idea flat landing from ten feet up on shitty bikes that snap at the headtube.

flag archi-magus (Sep 20, 2011 at 15:19)
You're absolutely wrong iamamodel. You case it on a big double, you break bones. There's really no getting around it most of the time. If you come up short on a table, you're landing on something flat and it hurts, but you can ride it out. If you're just barely shy of the landing you usually end bouncing off of the flat and landing smooth on the downside anyway. If you're even a couple feet shy on a big double it's going to most likely be a big deal.

Think about it, a flat landing from 10 ft high, or landing on a fine point that is angled so that all of the force hits your bottom bracket and stops you completely. Just the obvious mechanics of jumping a bike and forward momentum should let you know which one is worse...
  • + 1
flag jeffrupert (Sep 20, 2011 at 15:57)
yea i agree with archi-magus my city built a park out of all tables and iv cased them many times worst iv done is not much at all iv also frame cased gaps, it hurts.
  • + 1
flag Orsumness (Sep 20, 2011 at 16:19)
The thing about having table tops is that people are more inclined to do it and hence have fun with their friends. A good example of a tabletop at work is the Crabbapple Hits jumps at Whistler. They are "off the charts" big and had they have been doubles only the pros would be hitting them. However they didn't have raised lips on the downramps like these ones which could pose a problem when casing. Valid arguement though.
  • + 1
flag iamamodel (Sep 20, 2011 at 17:53)
Casing a ten foot table is one thing - casing a twenty foot table is another. The impact raises exponentially with the speed at impact.

Yes Orsumness, those in the photos do have raised lips - imagine nosing into the the upside of that.

Anyone that chainrings a gap from ten foot high should have bailed. Learning to bail is part of jumping. People think "Its a flat landing, I'll be right" whe instead they would have bailed on a double.
  • + 2
flag Orsumness (Sep 20, 2011 at 21:33)
Nosing a table with a raised landing isn't any worse than nosing a double. The Crabapple hits jumps are f*cking massive not just ten foot and casing that distance does have a major impact on your ankles. However if they were doubles the consequences of bailing and coming to a stop after 20ish feet of airtime are far worse. In this instance, the tables with the raised landings possibly aren't the best option in the world but are better for the intended riders (beginners right up to advanced riders) than a double which only the advanced riders will do.
  • + 1
flag jeffrupert (Sep 21, 2011 at 4:53)
raised landings are that bad yes they hurt abit more and i have popped my rear tire casing one before( only cuz my rim is F***ed though) but i would still prefer to come on that then a gap
  • + 1
flag Lester22291 (Sep 23, 2011 at 14:01)
personally i think tables are safer, but iamamodel definitely brings up a good point that you dont ride doubles unless you actually know what youre doing. Keeps the kids with $150 wal-mart bikes from ruining parks by not clearing landings, riding when wet, etc.

flag Knife-in-the-dark (Sep 21, 2011 at 8:05)
No numbnuts, it doesn't. There is about 2000-2500 ft elevation difference between the 2. And actually, all the snow melted, that was even at that higher elevation. I work in the area, and the 10 day has 60 plus everyday. Try using your head before talking crap. FYI, the first amount of snow that would have closed that area last year was mid nov. If you have more crap to talk Pm me, I only live 5 mins away if you wanna get tough interwebs toughguy.
